Landfall is a music album composed by Laurie Anderson and performed with the traditional strings of the Kronos Quartet. Inspired by her experience during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, Anderson, an iconic musician and storyteller, uses 30 songs to convey feelings of loss, fear, and nostalgia through a blend of multimedia, instrumental arrangements, and lush electronics.
The goal of this project was to capture the emotions Laurie Anderson expresses in her songs. Her fear and concern during this harrowing experience come through powerfully in the album, and I wanted to reflect those intense feelings in the design of her vinyl cover.
To create a fitting design, several weeks were spent exploring different mark-making techniques. Ultimately, this painted composition was selected as the vinyl cover. The abstract, organic nature of the piece powerfully embodies a sense of falling and despair, reflecting Anderson's emotional experience. Upon first glance, the viewer is immediately struck by the album's somber and poignant tone.
